i know they have all 3 ways of writing a kanji, but i dont know how many of them they include.

If you are talking about 書道三体字典( by 高塚竹堂), YES．
at least 3413 kaji are provided. (it's depends on edition. others has 3400 kanji)

you can see 三体 of (?) 1006 kanji (+ hiragana) on following site.

woo thanks for the site ^_^ i googled "santaijiten" but i obviously cant get hits from japanese pages

i dont know what the difference of a 三体辞典 and a 書道三体字典 is though (i actually had to copy-paste those on JWPce to figure out what it said )

one more thing: does a 三体辞典/書道三体字典 actually show stroke order/direction and kanji definition? or is it like that website? pics are good if you know the print writing stroke order but not good if you're a newb like me B)

if you want to know kanji stroke order, I don't think 書道三体字典 is a good material.

If you'd like to learn Japanese calligraphy, 三体字典 will be useful.
You can learn 行書体(Semi-cursive script) 楷書体(regular script)、草書体(Cursive script). that is reason of 三体(three　ways). Hand writing especially 草書 is hard to recognized even for Japanese people.
書道三体字典 is a books for learning calligraphy.
(and not so famous for ordinary people.)
Since the shaps of letters are very different,( depends on calligrapher.) you need check whose work you 'd like to get.

i read about santaijiten on the nihongoresources grammar ebook, so i thought its good for a beginner/intermediate in kanji, but i obviously assumed wrong. guess i'll pick one up later, when i've got at least the stroke order of most kanji down.

Yes, 三体字典 tend to be for calligraphy geeks.

I'm a proud owner of one, though, and studying it can help your penmanship. Penmanship isn't such a big deal in English, but I think it's much more significant in Japanese.

三体字典 can also help you train yourself to decipher those 'flowing' characters that look like someone passed out as they were in the middle of writing something. :p

I certainly feel that way everytime my Japanese friends notice the 三体字典 sitting on my bookshelf. It's probably that open-mouthed pause as they first see it, followed by the slow lifting of the arched-brow gaze in my direction...

What else can you say to that but a dejected:

when i was 17 and didn't know how to do caligraphy, i used to sketch the shapes out and paint them in..

I have been calligraphy free for never.... yoroshiku onegaiitashimasu

Actually, I just got home from work and, inspired, took my 字典 off the shelf - and I realized I don't have a 三体字典 but a 五体字典 - for serious geeks only!!!

The five styles:

楷書　かいしょ　block or print style
行書　ぎょうしょ　semicursive or flowing style
草書　そうしょ　fully cursive or 'grass' style
隷書　れいしょ　ancient square style
篆書　てんしょ　ancient bronze seal style

Of course, right next to my 五体字典 are the Nelson's Kanji Dictionary, the NTC Japanese-English Character Dictionary, Kenneth Henshall's Guide to Remembering Japanese Characters and Shirakawa Shizuka's 常用字解.

New Nelsons plus the old one? Bleh, The spine on my New Nelson's has broke. It's not as if I use it enough for the spine to break so I'll just call it shoddy work. I haven't even used it to look up 100 words yet.

My goal is to be able to write legible 行書. So I'm working pretty hard on my printing right now. Slowly I'm getting better. One day I'll buy a book on 行書 and start practicing that. Until then it's strict 楷書 practice.

Heh, I've been thinking I threw my Webster's Japanese-English dictionary away but apparently, it just migrated to the bookshelf across the room. It's between my PC bible and NTC's Japanese Cultural Code Words.

Sigh, I have so many Japanese books, and I can only look forward to the lot getting heavier and heavier every year. Now Kodansha's Japanese-English Communicative Dictionary is "shipping soon" which is one step up from, "hasn't shipped yet" I suppose.

kodansha's pocket dictionary is what i carried around as a missionary, and i think i still have it.. i even marked it up like it was a coloring book.. i frequently would listen and just pick up words from conversation.. sometimes it would surprise me what people talked about on trains.. ooohhhh
