Japanese Slang Words

Reading the post by Clay, I was almost immediately interested in learning words such as 'poi'. In my Japanese class, my teacher doesn't teach us slang like that. In some ways I think it would be funny to know a few words just so that I can use them around my friends. Of course i'm not talking about 'bad words' (I hope you all know what I mean) but words like yabai etc.

WWWJDIC doesn't seem to do a very good job on tagging slang words as 'slang' but here are a few that were properly tagged. (I've filtered out some to keep it roughly PG rated).

I think so. It's a Kansai thing made famous by a couple of comdians (i.e. catchphrase). If you say it around Tokyo people will think you're imitating the comedian and not seriously exepcting an answer. As far as I know it's still used in Kansai as a serious phrase.

The thing is, slang does get used in everyday situations, in English and in Japanese.

Although I don't think it's necessary for beginners to try memorizing slang in order to pepper their speech with it (which just sounds ridiculous if you haven't gotten the hang of how and when to use slang), I would say that learning slang isn't completely pointless.

I mean, if you have no grasp of slang, you wouldn't understand 80% of what my students say to me on a daily basis. You wouldn't grasp much of what your drinking buddies are saying to you. Even words like おかま are thrown around on television all the time. Knowing slang like this will greatly increase your comprehension of the daily, spoken language.

Gods, yes! I hear this so many times a day. I'd need more fingers and toes to count them all.

Anyway, the meaning is along the lines of the English "Why is that?" The Japanese, however, is much stronger and aggressive.

Maybe more like "Why the h*ll is that?!?" (with a hint of 'you're whacked' implied )

When you've gotten to a point where you can understand standard grammar in conversation, then it's great to learn some slang.
