Japanese Learning Game (RPG Style)

Postby Deo » Fri 06.23.2006 5:53 pm

Did not see this listed here on the site though I might have missed it.. Anyways I've started playing a Japanese game designed for learning Hiragana/Katakana and especially Kanji, which I have found invaluable and more fun/quicker than just simple flashcards. Kinda RPG style a little with different areas for increasing difficulty. Thought I'd post the link incase anyone else trying to learn Japanese is trying to find another learning method.

Completely FREE and a small download ( < 10MB ).

Anyone else try this before? Kinda fun though Kanji is kicking my ass. :(

Oh yeah, for every game session mistakes are also logged into a separate text file that helps pinpoint problems.

I can vouch for the greatness of this game. For some reason, kanji are much easier to learn when dungeons and treasures are involved. ;)

I haven't seen this one before, but LRNJ and Knuckles in China Lang are similar.

I see* they are getting on about as well as I'd expect given the way Knuckles in China Land was first promoted.

* I've decided not to post the link I was going to as I wouldn't want to risk provoking anybody to bring the argument back into this forum.

[edit]Man I'm a careless typist :-(

You know, there was a similair thread like this one not so long ago. That just started off with a bad gamelink. I dont want to post links either because im kind of lazy, but that aside Knuckles in China Land is baddd stuff and Slime Forest isnt really worth the download.
Good luck with studying everybody and I hope one day I will be able to pick it back up.

Until then, a nice goodbye from me to you ;)

I think Slime Forest / LRNJ is good for drilling kana and Japanese keyboard mapping, but I wouldn't recommend it for learning kanji, aside from the fact that it teaches you to recognise radicals. I expect the other two are the same, but I haven't tried them.

The new jrpg seems to do a good job of teaching readings of kanji in context, but doesn't address meanings at all.

I think the game would work better if it used a sound clip of each syllable, then enter the Hiragana either from direct keyboard or a Hiragana keyboard on the screen. I'm personally staying away from Romaji as much a possible.

PS since there seems to be a down Load Problem from the creater of the RPG game, I uploaded it to my server, it should work
