RE: Kanjis about shapes and forms
I don't know. The guy was posting stuff directly related to Japanese studies. He thought that studying kanji that had related themes could aid in acquisition. He offered to provide more examples if others found the method to help them, as well.
He was trying to be honestly helpful, and he gets ridiculed for it.
If you though his post was superfluous, a simple "please don't post lists of vocabulary" would have sufficed.

RE: Kanjis about shapes and forms
The thing is, there are THOUSANDS of words you can connect with others thematically. Should we have a thread for body parts? A thread for "hand-kanji words"? A thread for flower words? A thread for time words?
That would really start to clutter up the forum and add to the noise-to-signal ratio.
What can you SAY about a post like that? What kind of conversation can it bring up? What kind of feedback and interaction? This is a forum, after all.
That's why we have dictionaries.

I don't disagree with you. I just don't think someone who is trying to be helpful should be disparaged and made fun of. It's not a very good way to foster a sense of community here at the forums OR to encourage people in their studies.
A gentle reprimand would be enough.
I mean, it's not like he was being cocky or coming up with something totally off the wall.

I think lists like this might work well in the wiki when it gets opened up.

I wasn't aware that my initial post was making fun of the poster. It was just commentary. Commentary that I *thought* would produce "I agree" or "I disagree" responses.

AJBryant and Mukade,
Thank you very much for your comments. I am actually in the process of building up some vocabulary lists for JLPT L1 myself, and I just thought it would be useful to share it with the board. I understand that most board members do not like it, and I will not post any more such threads.
As the contents of this thread has deviated from the aim of the forum, do you prefer to have it removed? If you do, I do not mind and you are welcome to notify the board moderator.

Personally, I am very much against "nuking" threads. Closing them is one thing, but making them vanish smacks of a revisionist view of history with which I don't agree.
The thread has been here. People have read it. People can learn from it. Maybe they'll learn not to do info dumps. If we make the thread vanish, no one will be able to get that lesson from the thread.

[Edit]Oh, initial post. I was looking at the one-after-initial post[/Edit]
Commentary, yes. However I think I would categorize it as "inflammatory commentary".

which he may not have

comment on it in a post, lock the thread, delete after a couple of days and PM him with a reason
thats what i'd suggest tho i cant say i got that much experience as a moderator and i'd probably find it a tiresome job
You know you've been hanging around a forum too long when people start quoting you and agreeing

You realise that dictionaries are free on the internet, right?

Sheesh. All this comment on a post, which while not particularly useful isn't particularly harmful either. If it hadn't been for all the backroom lawyers and people with a quip this thread would be buried down in the forum and ignored by all by now.

I like chicken. No not the dark meat. Just the white meat.
Summary: I'm a poultry racist.
This thread is soo weird, but now I too have cemented my pointless random spot in history as well.. Goooooooo random confusing threads. May you flourish for all-time.
