IRC room?

I'm assuming that there are at least more than a few people who knows what IRC is and how it works. I'd like to see an IRC chat room for this website's members. It would be really helpful for stuff like asking questions, study groups, and just plain old chatting. What do you think?

There are a couple of un-official chatrooms floating about. Icy-Flame set one up on DeviantArt, and Diggity set one up on MSN, but nothing on IRC as far as I know. Someone should probably set one up...

As far as clients, I suggest either XChat (Windows, Linux, Mac), mIRC (Windows), or a Java applet client such as JWIRC and others. I can't vouch for anything but XChat displaying Japanese characters, though. Java applet clients especially may have problems with this.

If anyone needs further help setting up a client, let me know either in this thread or via PM.

I am fairly ignorant about all this, but if anyone knows of a chat script or applet that isn't too server intensive, I would be happy to install it for this site. Of course it would also have to support Japanese.

For ease of use, IRC is the way to go. It's easy to use with the right user-friendly client, and is fairly not server-intensive. However, there is no Japanese support that I know of, unless there's some type of add-on for mIRC you could use that I don't know about.

I stand corrected. I quickly visited the chan OnlyJedi created, and it looks like he incorporated some Japanese in the chan title.

It just needs the proper advertising, so we can get more people in it. Of course, if there are people here who do not know much about IRC, I'm sure the people who do will be glad to help.

Clay, There is a cool chat thing for websites called FlashChat that I think might be nice here... It's customizable and has different themes and look pretty cool. Go http://www.tufat.com/script2.htm to get it. I have seen it on a friends forum and like it alot... Also alot of Java based chats I have seen are really buggy on Macs and go slow and make the web browser crash... The only downside I see is that is is $5
