But maybe I'm just being a misanthrope again..... :@
Whole-heartedly agreeing with you! I'm one of the rude, ignorant and self-centered person mentioned but slowly maturing already because life is teaching me otherwise.

Yea, just remember all to keep the flaming to a minimum.
I think now would be a perfect time to say that I speak from experience; I've managed to get banned from every forum I've visited except this one.

I wonder if you meant being hot-headed = "flaming"?
What is that in Nihongo?
It's best to think twice before we speak, right? That's a good motto to hold.

Speaking English is a much bigger thing in Japan I guess, and most other non-English speaking countries. I think it's because speaking English shows intelligence, dedication, and it does open doors to other things such as moving to English-speaking countries and getting a job.
Just thought I'd add that most people learn English just to be able to get a job in their own country, nevermind in an English-speaking country.

Well, yes I meant that as well (should of said it though). Speaking another language especially one as widely spoken as English would be a great thing to put on your CV (as a foreigner or course ;p). If you work in business then it's pretty much essential.

Heh, it kinda implies to foreigners. Most business degrees these days come with a minor language course - I know Japanese is one.

RE: About Japan
Well Japan is a very unique country. Personally I love it and I've never even been there. I bet the people in Japan are just as essentric as we are here in America. I have never met many Japanese fans. So I assume you like Japanese animation, correct? B)

Just because we're posting on a Japanese page doesn't mean we are huge fans of anime, and just because Japan is the birthplace of anime doesn't mean everybody watches it there. In fact, the otaku subculture in Japan is kind of looked down upon, and generally branded to be antisocial and weird. That's not to say that other places don't have a weird and antisocial subculture.

RE: America in Japan
Right now, most of the major American Fast Food chains operate in Japan. A partial list includes:
Winners: McDonald's, KFC, Subway, Denny's
Survivors: Pizza Hut, Wendy's
Losers: Burger King (only a few places), Arby's (Arby's is now defunct in Japan), IHOP (disappearing)
Japanese FM stations play American music of all kinds and have DJs with surprisingly good American accents.
Japanese pronounce foreign words as best they can given the limitations of their phonetic alphabet. I think they do a fairly decent job, considering. Americans have a less restrictive palette of sounds, yet we butcher Japanese names.

Some people are rude, ignorant, inconsiderate jerks, and the best that we can do is try to work with them.
Of course, I could just be full of s**t.
