Ok, I'm reading a book about Ryoma Sakamoto and of course one of the major themes in the book is the whole "Open the country" vs. "Expel the barbarians" debate. Anyway, I was thinking about it and wouldn't you consider any person who lives in a town for several years and never learns the correct pronunciation of that town to be a barbarian? How many grunts and former grunts do I have to meet before I meet ONE who knows how to pronounce Yokosuka? And Asakusa is not asaKUsa. Anyway, I just met another person who used to live there and can't pronounce it correctly. It's just amazing. At least take SOME time to try to learn the language and the culture...

I wasn't stationed in Yokosuka, but in Iwakuni everyone on base that I remember hearing said "YoKOs'ka"

Everyone I've ever met who was stationed there mispronounces it and just about every other name of every other place in japan. I mean come on, even if they don't study it, they must hear the name said on the trains!

Right. I got it wrong the first time, heck I'd forgive anyone who gets it wrong the first time, but it drives me crazy to hear "Asa-ku-sa" again and again after I'd patiently explained several times before that the 'U' is silent (unless you say it slowly of course, which no one ever does):)

Depends whether or not you live in/around tokyo.

Unless you:re talking about just the standard foreigner accent or something. 浅草 is always pronounced あさくさ around these parts.

I'm not sure where you're stressing that, but I think what the OP meant is a lot of people pronounce it like asa-koosa when it should be like a-sak-sa.

Have you ever taken the time to listen to Eagle 810 in Tokyo?? They stereotype so much on that station. "I just learned a Japanese word...now i'm gonna master the way of the ninja and take flight WAA CHA!!" They are stuck on ninjas for some reason. "She's giving me the death ninja look like any second she's gonna apply the death choke" Even the ads are class"When in town...ACT JAPANESE and not American. Your secrecy is our most important mission" That last part is fine and dandy,most importantly understanable, but the whole act Japanese thing really jumps at me.

You obviously missed Paul's point.

「君たち」「してやる」「しろ」

That style of Japanese is not welcome here, and if you feel the need to use it you should go elsewhere.
