Ignoring users
I was wondering if it would be possible have an ignore option integrated into the message board. There are some people on this board who's posts are consistently annoying to read. E.g. they refuse to put any effort into their posts, writing unintelligible English, using all caps/ no caps, making typos in every other sentence. I understand that different people are annoyed to different degrees by these things so I thing it would be best to give everyone a little moderating power of their own by allowing them to ignore users who write crap posts all the time. This would also save moderators the trouble of warning/banning people who are essentially just being annoying but aren't doing anything especially ban-worthy like posting porno or advertising.

To tell you the truth, I make plenty of typo's and grammer mistakes. But I sort of agree with you. It is annoying when every line is bombared with undechiperable english. And well to be quite honest, if I made a thread like this I would have been extra - extra careful not to many any mistakes at all. It seems you have made one mistake. "I thing it would be best to give everyone a little moderating power of their own by allowing them to ignore users who write crap posts all the time" I beleive that should be "I think......"

RE: Ignoring users
I'm not aware of any forum software (as opposed to chat or newsreader software) that allows killfiling of annoying posters.

The BigDaikon forum allows it (thank god). That place is like a wasp nest.

it wouldn't be *that* hard to implement. hardest part is user interface side. but is it a path we want to head down?

Speaking as a user if I 'ignore' some users so that I can't see their posts I will still (presumably) see the threads show up as having "new posts" and move to the top of the forum and will be very annoyed to find that the "new posts" are actually from people I've killfiled. In news software blocked users don't* show up like that.
* well it depends on the software I suppose

i wanted to make a thread on this a while back, myself. zengargoyle though expresses the reason i decided not to. i figured, if the mods and clay wanted to implement such a feature, they would lock and delete threads much more often - though instead they give people quite a bit of space for mistakes. i think its a matter of approach, and i think they have already defined theirs, so i didnt expect them to change it.
you can ofcourse still complain when it comes to certain users being extra annoying (i would like to post a few names :p). but thinking about it, i believe the mods are always aware of certain people who often make a mess or are rude. therefore there is little point in actually reporting something they know and have decided upon their approach towards the issue.
still, i agree i would be delighted to be able to ignore some posters. not because of typos or bad english, but because of bad behaviour and rudeness towards everyone else (which is a valid reason, but hard to actually prove - which is why reporting/ignoring probably isnt in the plans of our mods/admin).
edit - no need for software; in all the forums i've seen it being available, it was implemented in the code, so its a matter of adding a feature to the forum, not having people install software.

You know you've been hanging around a forum too long when people start quoting you and agreeing

then you would probably be annoyed.
even though i haven't used news in ages and ages, i rue the day some fool decided that the web needed forums instead of newsgroups.

Eak, I’m probably the top one on that bad Grammar list. (Please excuse my southern raising) but to omit someone’s views over the choice of bad grammar or an improper education is a daft move. Even a wise man can learn something from a foolish man.
If it’s too much, you can always set up a member group on the forum, per say list of members that can only post in said forum section.
Oh, and nice use of grammar to some of the ppl here, I notice other post outside of this thread from the same ppl seems to be riddled with mistakes. CAN WE ALL SAY WORD GRAMMAR CHECK?:o

RE: Ignoring users
i dont think its a matter of mistakes in writing, but rather about people behaving rudely or behaving like the world is there only so they can get help on whatever they want however they want.
that said, after reading a couple of new posts in other threads, i decided i'd prefer a "kill this poster" button. i admit i've had to stop reading threads, not because i wasnt interested in the content, but because of some random posters that make a mess.

If this forum wasn't actively moderated as it is then an ignore option would be nice. As it is, I really don't think it is necessary.

RE: Ignoring users
Ignoring could get annoying to people who arent ignoring anybody, b/c you may be repeating something that the person you are ignoring just said. Then you may have good insite on most subjects, but now you are being ignored by quite a few people.
If you are in a foreign land where they don't understand your native tongue, just speak louder and slower...in the language that they don't know.
