Important points when writing in Japanese

Wow, this was so helpful... I've mostly known about politeness levels, but the kanji thing really helped! I used to use 今日は all the time, and it always seemed a little odd... thanks for the tip!! (And the other examples of non kanji used words was helpful, as well!! Thank you!):D

About the 'so-called' experts from Japan, my great Aunt the other day was saying how all the women's bathroom stalls were open so people could watch them... and I know for a fact (having stayed in Japan for a month quite recently) that she is very mistaken... she claims to have seen it while in Japan, but I think she must have been confused with something else...

Some stalls are rather open (more so than in the US). I've seen more than one public stall that was *really* public. So to speak.

Keatonatron, I agree with what you said.. I am a Japanese citizen and I used to live there, and you make a good point. My Japanese is not that good anymore so I am "relearning" it, although many rules I still follow as you say. I can also read, write, and speak Chinese so thats a plus. Oh hey, Heatonatron, where are you from in Yokohama? I am from Hongodai, just one station from Oofuna.

Thats not true if ur bigger, stronger and blacker than the other people. Its the only reason why I don't beat up for saying impolite or stupid things in english(which happens very often).

But in all truthfullness, knowing how to be polite is nessessary for all languages. Its little things like politeness level that can make people think of you as inferior or a *vagabond*.

I developed some black spots due to excessive exposure to UV radiation and had to have them cut out.

They don't make you stronger but they can certainly kill you.

Ah, this thread is rather informative! When I was first learning kanji, I used to use 今日は instead of こんにちは all the time...then I stopped, because I found myself always reading 今日は as きょうは instead...I've seen plenty of people routinely use that as the kanji for こんにちは, though...
