you can do what i did, and check your local book store under the "languages" section and pick up a book that teaches you the grammar, vocabulary, and even kana. I got mine for about 15 bucks, and it goes at a ressonable pace.
for a little extra money some will even come with cassettes or CD's that you play along with the lesson to help you with correct pronunciation.
