View topic - Kore/Kono?
Kore wa nan desu ka? - What is that?
Kono neko wa nan iro desu ka? - What color is that cat? (or that cat is what color).
The same thing is for "Sore" and "sono", and "are" an "ano."
sore means this and are means that over there (an object away from both the speaker and listener).

Kore = noun
Kono = adjective
So, Kono is used when it is describing something.
IE: "What is this animal?" "Kono doubutsu wa nan desu ka."
Kore is used when "this" is a noun.
IE: "This is a dog" "Kore wa inu desu."
