Chuck Palahniuk. I just love his books...
If the name is unfamiliar, he wrote the book fight club.
I'm currently reading Haunted, and it's a little difficult to get through. It's entertaining enough, but some parts are really gross.
I'd recommend Cryptonomicon to everyone, as well. And for the guy who likes characters, I think you'd enjoy Bobby Shaftoe (one of the principle characters).
edit: that would be you, Belie.
If you asked me what my favorite book was, at the moment I'd have to say Dream of Scipio, a tale that winds through the fall of the Roman Empire, the Black Plague, and World War Two. Very well written.

Lord of The Rings is also one of my favourites.
I also really enjoyed Ivanhoe - I need to reread it and improve my olde Englysh :p

RE: Books
Anything by:
Tony Hillerman (Navajo cops Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee on the Big Rez)
Aaron Elkins (esp. mystery series about Gideon Oliver)
Alexander Kent (Nicholas Ramage series)
Dudley Pope (Richard Bolitho series)
JRR Tolkien
Tom Holt (funny as hell: check out "Expecting Someone Taller")
Lillian Jackson Braun (her "The Cat Who" series is a guilty pleasure)

RE: Books
The Giver is a good book its about a utopia of sameness, and it has some great characters ands its very detailed.
However, the best romance story I read, was Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. IT was the greatest, it made me cry to be honest. Its a really great book.

Fantastyfantasyfantasy.
I like most of the stuff that Tor Fantasy publishes--anything by Sara Douglass or Jacqueline Carey to be specific. I just finished the first half of the Wayfarers Redemption series, and I'm starting on the fourth book now.
Jacqueline Carey stuff is long, though. I've been stuck on Kushiel's Dart since freshman year, and I'm still only halfway done with it. Great story, a little lengthy.
EDIT: Grammar error.

RE: Books
Another good book I'm reading right now is Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. It was a bestseller for a while and for good reason. Its a lenghty story about forbiden love between a human and a vampire. It might sound plain and simple now, just as I thought at first, but it turned out to be quite addicting. I HIGHLY recommend this book!!!!!!!!!
