with meebo, you might have to type in the room you want to join manually. (other clients let you browse for current rooms).

try joining: lounge@conference.chat.thejapanesepage.com or chat_in_japanese@conference.chat.thejapanesepage.com

click 'Start or join group chat' icon (the one with three smiley people and a talk baloon).
in 'Chat Room:' box type 'lounge' or 'chat_in_japanese', in 'Chat Server:' enter 'conference.chat.thejapanesepage.com' and click 'Chat' button.

but it says only numbers and letters can be used for the room i know how to enter the lounge but not chat in japanese.

The onlone list says like 20ppl are on but when I get on they are offline

no, they are online, just not in chatrooms. one of the nice little side benefits of Jabber server is that it's a full IM protocol. they can be online and chatting privately to other members. or (like me most of the time) they can be online as long as they keep client open, chatting or just idleing about.

one of these days (no, really one of these days) i'll fix the online users page with a 'in chatroom' page that shows the chatrooms and who's chatting at the moment. my chatroom bot keeps crashing every few weeks and i have to figure out why and fix it before making it public. the current online user list comes directly from the chat server and lists all users who are connected whether they are currently in a public chatroom or not.

from an earlier post... it seems that the current version of meebo.com is a little broken, it doesn't let you use '_' in room names (which is fine by the specification). you may need to use jwchat.org to connect to the other chatrooms like 'chat_in_japanese@chat.thejapanesepage.com". i'll try and file a bug report somewhere and maybe they'll get things fixed...
