hrm, be a little careful with the メ@that extra hook makes it start to look like り
Notice that the little tear drop is slightly convex to the top right? Think of it as a tear comming out of someone else's left eye, or your right eye if you're looking in the mirror.

When you see a stroke, the thin to thick doesn't only indicate direction of the stroke, it indicates pressure. The tear shape begins with a light touch then ends more deeply in the paper with a slight bend.

Remember to transliterate your name based on its pronounciation, not it's spelling.

A good tip to almost every one who posted their writing: use cross-ruled paper and write one character in each square. Then you have to make all the letters the same size. There was someone who wrote his/her kanji three times bigger than kana (I can't remember who it was) and that a) looks really weird b) is incorrect.

Of course I understand that it's hard for a beginner to write kanji like 語 the same size as, for example, hiragana syllable い, but if you don't practice, you'll never learn... Actually kana should be *slightly* smaller than kanji.

Pardon the big size of the image. And it would probably have looked a bit nicer if I hadn't written it with a pencil. I would have prefered to use a mechanical pencil(Is that what they're called in english?), but I couldn't find one.

The problem with cross ruled paper in the US is it is way....too.....small.

I just use normal ruled paper, not college ruled and just randomly switch whether I'm writing right-left or top-down. This way I'm alternatly working on balancing character width or character height.

LoF, My main suggestion for now is to remember to keep the characters the same height and width. I noticed that some of your character are within 2 lines, and others span 3. Remember that if you want to write 1 character between 3 lines, then you should write them all that way. Each character should give the general impression of a square.

Also, While you are first starting out, it is much easier to learn character balance writing larger. So I recomend using the college ruled, but writing everything between 3 lines for now, or dropping college ruled for normal ruled, and writing between 2 lines. Of course, if you find or make ruled paper with 1 inch squares, that would be ideal. If you do want to buy the normal 1/4 inch ruled paper, write within 4 squares not 1. Part of balancing the characters is defining in your mind the vertical and horizontal centerlines and where they meet.

I've found that my characters look best if I'm focusing on the white space and not the lines themselves.
