RE: Not a serious question
The good ol' days, huh. Now the place is crawlin' with 'em.
Was that sarcastic? 'Cause in my recent time in Japan I spotted a grand total of seven gajins on trains and in stations.

I can also remember high school kids gathering in the vestibule to stare in through the window at the gaijin seated in the car, much as you or I would stare at snakes through the glass in the reptile house at the zoo.
Not many people have seen that great modern Japanese cinema horror classic, "Gaijin on a Train," but a lot have seen the recent American "revisioning" of it...

whats a gaijin?
Direct Translation - Outsider
Indirect translation (more common meaning) - Foreigner
Although from what I understand, the latter tends to automatically imply the former.

Context is everything. Are you familiar with the Yamanote Line?

how about an old electric train with only one car. oodate to sendai = hella long time on train by yourself. i did the whole trip without seeing another person at any of the train stops. I think the whole ride was 7 or 8 hours.. those things are slow as mud..

How do you confuse a gaijin?
When you give him directions, tell him to ride the Yamanote to the end of the line.

You must ride some empty trains.
