what! no weekends?
Excuse my ignorance, but someone just told me that in Japan the people mostly work 7 days a week. Is that true?
The person who told me is quite old, so im hoping he was misinformed...

The Imperial Japanese Navy, I believe it was, used to have a song which listed the days of the week as:
Monday
Monday
Tuesday
Wednesday
Thursday
Friday
Friday
These days, many places have adopted a 5 day workweek. Some places have a 5 1/2 day workweek (half day on Saturday). And a great many still have a 6 day workweek (like my company).

Ok thanks, thats a relief. In South Africa the 5 1/2 day workweek is quite common, but luckily i only have to work 5 days a week. I wouldn't survive without weekends!
(Don't think i could even cope with working 6)

RE: what! no weekends?
It really just depends on how bad you need the money. If you want to get promoted and earn enough to actually support a family, you have to work insanely hard in the beginning. However, it really depends on the job. Some of my friends work 12 hours a day, 6 or 7 days a week, and other friends work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.
I think it's usually the really large companies that have the longer work weeks; since there's so much competition for promotion, you really have to work hard to get your superiors to notice you.

"Getsu getsu ka sui moku kin kin" -- one of my favorite gunka.
This one is a rather cheerful little ditty, as opposed to my other favorite gunka, "Subaru," which just makes you want to slit your wrist.

Japanese love maudlin songs. Just look at most enka pieces and gunka. Then again, apparently we do, too, or country music would have fewer divorces, wrecked trucks, and dead pet dogs.

I was just going to mention one, but I recall it was "Sake motte koi" (funny as hell, that song!) and not "Beer motte koi." Hm. Damn, that's a GOOD point. I guess even with Ebisu or Sapporo, beer's not "trad" enough for enka. Although I *think* I remember one or two enka with whiskey in the lyrics. Maybe a few with shochu.
