What is the name of this game?
A friend has a game but she can't recall the name.
I figured maybe those here who have been into Japanese for many years may remember it and know the name.
I will try to explain it.
It has a chess/checker type board, but the lines dividing the squares are raised to hold the square playing pieces. The board squares are all black
The square playing pieces show the number of moves allowed by that piece, however the numbers change each time it is moved. There are magnets under the board that cause the numbers to change.
The objectives are similar to chess.
She said she bought it in the 70's and has since lost the box with the name. The game was made in Japan.
Does anyone recall this game and if so what is it called? It is a facinating game.

No, shogi pieces aren't square, and I don't recall that the moves they can make are dependant on where they are on the board.

is it a 9x9 board? it could be sudoku.. but unlike chess you try to place the number 1-9 on the board without using the same number in the same row..

If it was from the 70s, it wasn't sudoku.
I don't know what it was, but it sounds interesting. A chess-like game with the addition of a certain amount of chance owing to the random change of the moves for the pieces. Hm.

The game is not Sudoko because I work those puzzles.
And it is a manual game, not electronic.
I don't have the board here, but I will guess it is 10-12" square
Products we had from other counties in the 70's were usually used in those countries. Today the country in which something was manufactured means nothing.
This was made in Japan which is why I guessed it may be a Japanese game.
It is fascinating, because you can't really plan moves in advance since you don't know how many squares any piece will be able to move after you move it.

interesting Tony, as all the info I was able to find said that Sudoku was created in the early 70's.. now of course I suppose it could have been one of those games that was ressurected in the 70's.. ah.. oh well.. just trying to help
