Er.... Forgive me for my ignorance but, what is the difference between a sticky and non-sticky post?

How can i explain...? Ehh yes, a sticky post (or topic, as most forums call it) will allways be on the top of the forum, while a nonsticky topic fall down if nobody post or rarely post in it..
