Gundam, for otakus?

I've been watching alot of Keroro Gunsou lately wich has alot of Gundam references in it. That has made become intrested in it and I've tried to learn more about the show and Gunplas. I think it's a cool show but when I told my Japanese penpal about it he was a bit shocked beacuse he told me that Gundam was for Otakus and Gunpla for little kids

Has anyone else here heard such a thing about Gundam? I can understand that Gunpla is mostly for kids but that the show had such high "Otaku factor" I had no idea of

Gundam just has robots in it, like Transformers, Gundam Wing, etc.
But... I absolutely HATE gundam! ANYTHING with the word gundam!
Gundamn = robots..
Robots are scary! They speak so weird!! O___O;

y does keroro like gundams so much? I think its his only flaw. Without it, he could definently rule the world.

And this reminds me of when I was chatting with some kids on Trickster last night and one said that he was a japanese otaku. Then everyone nearby also said they were otaku and they asked me if I was otaku. That seemed to contrast with some of the beliefs that in Japan otaku = bad in the way that trekkie = no life in Western society.

If you went to a Trekkie convention, would all of them refer to themselves as trekkies? Would the people at the football game next door think that trekkies had no life?

I don't think Gundam is for otaku people.
But maybe who don't watch animation or don't read manga would believe that Gundam is for otaku.... Well, I guess those people would think every animation and manga is for otaku people

アニメの中でもガンダムは結鴻茶^クっぽい番組ではないでしょうか？
ファフナーやＭｅｇａｚｏｉｄも同じような感じがあるけど、ガンダムのようなヲタクに印象的に強い番組は他にないと思う。（エヴァンゲリオンを除く）
