please translate.. よろしく

Postby lomagu » Thu 06.30.2005 5:25 am

I have this sentence:

私が思うに(人)は言えばわかる人だと思う。

I think it means something like... "I think (person) is someone who understands what you say to them." but I'm not quite sure.

If I say (the person) conceivably, you think that it is the person who is understood.

So, you were right! :D

Wow, what on-line translator did you get that from?
Such a post is pointless.

I got the same, word for word, on http://babelfish.altavista.com/tr .
Amazing, huh?:o

私が思うに(人)は言えばわかる人だと思う。
That is a strange sentance, no???
I would say, "If you tell me what I think of the person, I would understand them. (emotionally)"

でも、日本語の母国語者じゃなくて・・・誤りかな?

EDIT:

This one is kind of a tricky one, isn’t it? To me though, this is how I see things…

私が思うに(人)は言えばわかる人だと思う。
To me I think (so and so) would be the kind of person to understand if you told him.

I think that first “watashi ga omou ni” probably kind of threw you off course. In this kind of situation it’s used more to just stress the fact that this is just my opinion, something you see people use quite a bit during work and what not to kind of soften things up.

Other than that, the (人) part there is probably suppose to be an actual persons name too, which I think not having it there makes things even a little bit more confusing.

I don't know what about this sentence makes it so damn confusing, although Justin pointed out a number of things.

"I think that he's the type of person who is easily understood."
Is I think the closest english translation.

And I think we should put a ban on machine translators for answering questions. =)
"We are be having a game to be with the having and the have with the monkey eats another banana with the person have. have. have. have." (@^-^)b

I think I get the jist of it now. thanks ;)

It's actually from an email from a Japanese friend of mine. The (人) part is really a person's name, but I figured I didn't need to write their name in there. A little background might help in translating... I got angry at someone, the (人), but my friend thinks I should talk to them. I don't know if that helps or not.

And ya, hahaha.. translators suck. If I trusted the online translators, I never would've posted this thread.

またね!

Hmm. As always, bringing in an expert is probably the best course.
Talked to my english teacher about this one.

言えば分かる
Reasonable
(literally, if you say something, they will understand)

言えば分からない
Unreasonable
(literally, if you say something, they still won't understand)

My problem with the 言えば分かる was if WHO says, he/she will understand. But it makes more sense once you take 言えば分かる out as a set phrase.

So, like Justin said, 'I think (so and so) is a reasonable person.
