Couple of questions

Postby Zounoko » Fri 11.17.2006 5:13 pm

OK, I'm reading more slowly than I'd like, but time has been short of late. All of it is understandable, though the flights of fancy take some getting used to. But as usual, I have trouble with conversational Japanese...

So here are a couple of passages that I don't entirely understand. I suspect I would understand them if they were put into more formal Japanese, so if anyone can do that, I'd appreciate it.

I don't get the なすっと bit...

And in コロッケ, 村上春樹 says:

I understand that he is making excuses, trying to get her to go but I'm missing this bit, and I suspect it's probably funny, so I hate to miss it...

Thanks to anyone who can help.

I need to pull out the book and get some context before I tackle the first quote, but the second looks an awful lot like "But this place is a mess. If I knew you were coming, I would have cleaned up."

Thanks, Paul! I had no idea that was a word... I saw 思い (specifically, いい思い) and thought なすった was a standalone. Needless to say, looking it up proved fruitless.

Rich -- I bet you're right. I knew something was going to be put in order, but I thought it was the stuff he was doing on deadline. And the only thing I found for セーブ was a baseball play. And I know ZILCH about baseball. That's the one with the little round white ball, right? :)

Thanks to both of you.

Thanks, coco-san. Colloquial Japanese always seems so... telegraphic to me, and by expanding it, you made it much clearer!
