RE: Why You Want To Learn Japanese
I study Japanese because all the seats in the Russian class were full.
Seriously. I just wanted to take a language different from what all the other students at university were taking, and wound up in Japanese. For some reason, it was strange and different enough for me to fall in love with it.
Since then, it's been eight years. I've since found that I love Japanese food, and have been studying Japanese cuisine for a while now, along with Buddhism and literature.
I couldn't be happier.
Talk about serendipity.

Konnichiwa! I want to learn Japanese because I have lived in and visited Japan, have friends there and would like to talk to them in Japanese. I also like the language better than others, I don't really know why.

RE: Why You Want To Learn Japanese
I am learning Japanese because:
1) I am a student pilot, and I wish to fly for JAL or ANA, for their consistant and lucrative international missions.
2) I am also an independant research scientist in Aerospace Engineering (aircraft/spacecraft design). Nations willing to engage in major technological advancement, such as Japan, are a perfect place for me to work freely (unlike the U.S. where it's nearly illegal for certain research activities and aircraft designs to be tested)
3) The japanese culture is one of refinement and elegance, that few people in other countries can honestly treasure, as I do, and as I hope others here in the forum do.

I have no idea why I want to learn Japanese. I think it was originally because I wanted to help this Japanese guy leave a cult. (Long story) But I decided there was no hope for him because he's a male Libra. (Another long story). After that, there was really no reason for me to keep learning Japanese. The anime is alright but I like dubbed anime. Manga - I don't really read. Japanese culture is okay - I'm not totally interested in it because it's just weird to me.
So, honestly, there is no reason for me wanting to learn Japanese at the moment. Of course, learning Japanese could be the result of my voluntary isolation from the world. (And yet again, another long story)

I'm going to Japan this summer to live with a family who doesn't speak English, so I figured knowing Japanese would be very helpful.

No, really. I'm not kidding.
