Are there any(regarding video games and Kanji learning)

Postby Godzilla » Mon 12.18.2006 2:29 pm

Are there any good video games for the Nintendo DS out there that would be perfect for learning Kanji??? I think it would be a genius idea to use the pen and stylus to draw the kanji and the game will tell you if it is wrong. Then it could quiz you on Kanji vocabulary. This would be the perfect way to learn. Thanks!!

I have heard there is a kanji game (for Japanese children) for the DS but haven't tracked down the title. I also believe there is a 漢検 quiz soft coming out this month. But I haven't played with it yet.

I just typed this in a similar thread so sorry for the repeat, but here is what I wrote about the J-E, E-J and J-J dictionary that is all the rage:

After someone's recommendation (I think it was Keat?) I got a copy of the 漢字そのままDS楽引辞典 and love it! Well, of course it can't stand up to my SR-E10000, but the Genius J-E and J-E and 明鏡 J-J with kanji drawing ability for only about $50 - that's a steal.

So, I made a quick video showing off what it can do and decided to stock it for the store:

漢字そのまま楽引き辞典 is a great 英和・和英・国語 dictionary, which allows you to look up kanji through hand writing recognition (which I hear works very well).

I'm planning to get it along with a DS and Mother3.

[Edit - Clay beat me to it :p]

I also got one called DS楽引辞典 but it turns out it is an older version that doesn't support drawing kanji (just kana). It does have different dictionaries which may make it appealing for some. But make sure you get the 漢字そのまま one.

Now I have to try to unload the other one on Ebay...

I will get this too to try out:

It covers kanji from 10級 to 2級 and looks pretty neat.

Check the following links.

I think the 千年家族 sounds very good. It is a simulation game and the goal is to create a family that lasts 1000 years. I have a feeling that you will be able to practice reading every day words and phrases in this game.

ことばのパズルrequires some vocabulary and it seems to be hard according to the reviews by Japanese speakers. Also, I am not sure if you could buy it online from this site (I once tried to buy something on one of 楽天市 but the shop I tried did not have international setup.)

I saw lot more Japanese games for PS2 but they require a Japanese or international hardware.

You can also visit MSN JPN or Yahoo JPN to research on online Japanese games and educational resources.

Hope this helps.

Two games I like are
漢字検定, which as you can imagine, is just training for the Kanji Test. It has all the levels 10-2 (missing 1)

漢字の割り鳥 is a really fun game for practicing kanji, but unless you know a lot of kanji at the outset, it's going to be tough. There are also 四文字熟語 questions that unless you are Japanese, you will not get. Those stages took me FOREVER to get past.

They also have a bunch of kanji games aimed at 中学生 and 小学生 which might be good if you're just getting into it. I haven't tried any though, so I can't recommend any in specific.

i have 漢字そのまま楽引き辞典 and 漢字検定, they're both rather cool. 漢字検定 is always in my DS for use anytime i have a few minutes to spare. my only complaint is that i sometimes hit "OK" before the game has processed and identified my written answer and it counts as 'wrong'. :( (i.e. i write a "3" and hit "OK" before it recognizes my "3" as a '3').

Zengargoyle,

You can up the speed of the recognition until it recognizes the kanji as soon as you take your pen away for more than a moment.

Unfortuantely, writing the kanji becomes really difficult at that speed. ;)

I'm getting these two:
漢字検定 漢字の割り鳥
Can't wait to play, err, study with them.

There is also one called 200万人の漢検とことん漢字脳 evidentially put out by the same 漢検 people. Does anyone know how they are different?

I owed them both (漢字検定 and 200万人の漢検) and I ended up selling 漢字検定 because of the sloppy recognition and the fact it doesn't keep track (or at least doesn't tell you) which one's you've missed recently, etc. The 200万人の漢検 is good in the fact that there is a place to practice the questions you missed until you get them all correct. Also it's cheeper at somewhere around 2000円, the only draw back being I wish there were more questions. The game is really only good for review however, after one has alreadly learned the kanji being tested, otherwise you're just learning the answers to a few specific questions, but will be lost when the context is changed or when you come accross a new 熟語.

Thanks for the information. I have the PS2 漢検 game made by the same people. Like you said it is only good for review since there isn't a flashcard type of study section. That's a shame.

Just for the record, there was a type miss in my previous post that I didn't catch until just now.

漢字の割り鳥 X
漢字の渡り鳥 O

Sorry 'bout that.

I have the PS2 漢検 game made by the same people

My wife got me that last year for my b-day. I really didn't like it at all because of the no-writing and generally low production values. The 200万人 漢字検定 game on the DS is far superior

I hope you realize that 漢字そのまま楽引き辞典 is infact a dictionary, not a game. ;)

Not that that makes it a bad piece of software, just not a game. ;)
