Te form, y'all

Hey. I have seen some problems with this recently.

FIRST, you should know the 'dictionary form' of a verb (tabemasu=taberu, ikimasu=iku).

Then it is, for the most part, a pattern. Note that te form becomes plain past by switching the te to ta or de to da. (tabeta=tabemashita)

IF the dictionary form of a verb ends as

う,つ,or る, the te form is ~って(matsu=matte)

む,ぶ, or ぬ, te form is ~んで. (nomu=nonde)

す is して (hanasu=hanashite)

く is いて (kaku=kaite)

ぐ is いで (oyogu=oyoide)

THE EXCPTIONS:

くる=きて
する=して
いく(to go)=いって

OK!

The harder they come, the harder they fall, one and all.

uhmm.. past negative? isn't it just plain past? i think past negative would be 'tabemasen deshita' or 'tabenakatta'.

on another note, -te can also be changed to -tara for the conditional and -tari(suru) for the alternative/indefinite (or -dara/dari as needed).

1. Zen is right; it is "「食べなかった」 ".

2. I already expounded this in another thread.
http://www.thejapanesepage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=941

3. This thread seems to have been improperly placed in the "Learning Materials" forum - not that it matters much.

:D

I wasn't being rude, despite my apparent rudeness.

My bad- plain past.

I just added it without much thought...ちょっと困っているんですかね・・・。:o

Also, call me an idiot, but that te form chart you posted gives me a headache...lol
I guess I'm not very good with charts...:(
