Postby Schattenjedi » Mon 07.25.2005 7:27 am

In a script, a train conductor says:

It seems to me that 自由が丘 is a place but I don't understand how a name could be in this form with が. Does it mean something like "hill of freedom"? Thanks for any help.

You can have place names with a が in them. I live in 関が原 (せきがはら)。

自由が丘 is near Tokyo (I believe).

OK, I think I understand the meanings of the names too now. In normal speech, not being used as place names, they would be 自由がある丘 and 関がある原. Or could they show up in normal speech as 自由が丘 or 関が原 without being place names??

But it's wierd to say that. Just like you wouldn't say Jacksonville is the Village of Jackson. You CAN say it, but it's kinda wierd.

Jiyugaoka is a great place. Were you on the Tokyu Toyoko line?
