Mmm... well for WAYY beginners, I would suggest 'Sing and Learn Japanese' the first and the second
These books are specifically for children and beginners who wish to, put it simply, sing and learn Japanese! xD I am guessing you aren't THAT beginner, though... I don't know many audio or books that really help, but good luck with your learning!
Expect to see randomness and sarcasm in my posts.

Yes, Pimsleur is a great way to start. I started using it a year ago yesterday and I think that Pimsleur is the reason why I'm still studying Japanese. It's addictively fun, you can develop a reasonably good pronunciation and you can use what you learn immediately.
However, Pimsleur is only an audio course, and you'll need a textbook too. I wrote a few thoughts on textbooks with some other beginner's tips here, so I wouldn't have to keep retyping them on various forums.

Rosetta Stone is also a good series, as it mixes listening with writing and reading.

Also, if you dont like listening to casset tapes and you need to momorize all the Kana, i suggjest 'Remembering the Kana' I got it this morning at Barns and Nobles. It helps you lear all the hiragana and Katakana:D
