For this story and other stories on, could you include the kanji with it. it would benefit everyone who reads it. Are you going to go down the list of stories on that page? Good Luck! Birddog ;)

May be have selected vocabulary from the reading that is not common in usage or the vocabulary that can be useful later on in coming stories.

What you have so far is great. :D

Do you mean when we post the translation, we post the original japanese aswell? Like we did for the last story? or something different?

We only have permission to use Gonpachi's stories, so I will just be working backwards from those. There are quite a few of them, so they should last a while.

Another enjoyable Gonpatchi story and a little bit shorter this time.

Ducks and White Raddishes - By Gonpachi

Kicchomu who was promised duck soup, but served raddish soup, came bursting into the villiage chiefs's house the next day, in a total panic.

It's It's Awful, In my garden, It's full of ducks!

What!?

The villiage chief grabbed his gun, and went to to Kicchomu's field.

But.

In his field there were only blue-necked raddishes lined up in a rows.
There was nothing that even looked like a duck.

The Chief narrowed his eyes and looked closely between the raddish leaves, there were no ducks, not even sparrows or crows.

Oi, Kicchomu?

What Chief?

Where are the ducks?

What are you talking about? Look Chief, Over there, aren't they ducks?

Kicchomu pointed to the area where the raddishes were.

Where are they? I can't see anything shaped like a duck. Where are they hiding?

Look over there, over there, I can clearly see something.
(I don't completely understand the nuance of 陰も何も here...)

Kicchomu pointed to the closest raddish, grinning from ear to ear.

Isn't a bunch of fat fine ducks growing here, as good as the ones in the duck soup
yesterday?

As he was told that, the Chief finally realised.

Kicchomu turned the Chief's words against him, by calling Raddishes, Ducks, like the Chief called Raddish Soup, Duck Soup.

I see.

The Chief moaned.

How about that Chief? Look Ducks, they're ducks, beautiful ducks!

Kicchomu was having a field day.

Look Ducks, Chief, fine blue necked ducks! Mwahaha Ducks, Ducks, tonight the Chief's dinner with be a duck soup feast again.

The Chief turned his eyes away from the hysterical Kicchomu.

Now I see Kicchomu.

He loaded his gun with a bullet and lit the fuse.

Eh? Chief?

Kicchomu expression turned to "What tha??".

Fine Ducks Hey?!

The Chief took aim at a Raddish.

Bang!

The Duck destroying bullet hits, and the raddish explodes.

Ch, Chief!?

Without bothering about the surprised Kicchomu the Chief quickly reloaded and shot again.

Jeez, Just... Chief, Wait, Hold it!

Bang!

Ducks, Ducks!

Bang!

They're Ducks, They're Ducks Kicchomu!

One by one, the shells quickly scattered on the ground.

Mwahahaah Ducks! Mwahahaha

Stoooooopppppp!

BangX3!!!

In the field bathed in crimson evening light, the dew remaining raddishes cast long shadows like gravestones.

Raddish remains and the smell of gunpowder have almost gone away.
(I guess 消えそうになかった should be 消えそうになった, or does 消えそうになかった also make sense?)

Not gone away. They still remain.^^

Wild Ducks and Daikon Radishes by Gonpachi

Kicchomu, who had been told he would feast on duck soup, but had been served daikon soup, burst into the village's leader's house the next day in a state of panic.
"I...it's terrible, Chief! My garden, it's full of ducks!"
"What did you say?"
The village headman seized his rifle and went to Kicchomu's vegetable plot.
However, in the field was nothing but the green tops of daikon radishes. There was no sign of even one duck.
The headman narrowed his eyes and carefully examined the radish leaves, but there wasn't even a sparrow or a crow, let alone a duck.
"Hey, Kicchomu?"
"What is it, Chief?"
"Where are the ducks?"
"What are you saying, Chief? Don't you see the ducks over there?
Kicchomu pointed toward the field of radishes.
"Where are they? I don't see any sign of any ducks. Where in the world are they?"
"They're right there, as plain as the nose on your face!"
Kicchomu, with a broad grin on his face, pointed to the first row of radishes.
"Are those big, splendid ducks, growing so closely together from the ground, in any way inferior to yesterday's duck soup?"
When he said that, it finally dawned on the headman what this was all about.
Kicchomu, who had been told that the daikon soup he'd been served was duck soup by the headman, was turning his words against him, and saying that his daikon radishes were ducks.
"I see."
The village chief groaned.
"How are they, Chief? Look at the ducks, the ducks, the splendid ducks!"
Kicchomu was having a grand old time.
"Look at the ducks, Chief, look at the splendid heads of green ducks! Wahahaha, ducks, ducks, our chief will feast on duck soup again tonight!
The chieftain turned his head from sight of the merrily laughing Kicchomu.
"I see, Kicchomu."
He loaded his gun, and cocked the hammer.
"Huh? Chief?"
Kicchomu's "How do you like that" face froze.
"Indeed, they are splendid ducks."
The chieftain took careful aim at a radish.
Bang!
Hit by the shot meant to take down a duck, the radish shattered.
"Ch...chief?"
Paying no mind to the surprised Kicchomu, the headman had already reloaded, and shot once more.
"Woah, hold on, Chief! Wait, wait!"
Bang!
"They're ducks! They're ducks!"
Bang!
They're ducks, they're ducks, Kicchomu!"
One by one the shells littered the ground.
"Kyahahahaha, they're ducks! Kyahahahahaha!
"Pleeeeease stop!"
Bang!
Bang!
Bang!

As the field was stained red by the evening sun, the few remaining radishes cast long, long shadows like gravestones.
It seemed that the stench of gunpowder that had enveloped the radishes had not yet dissapated.
