Tokyo, Rappongi and African "Gaijin"

Post by Spyral_Out » Thu 02.24.2005 3:26 pm

Spaztic's post about blacks visiting Japan made me remember a question I have been unable to answer after visiting Tokyo last summer. When we visited Rappongi there seemed to be a good deal of African themed restarounts from places like Ethiopia and the like (one was called Zion, (looked like maybe a Rasta bar). There was also alot more people of African origin (not just African American) than I would have expeted as well. Does anyone know if there is any specific reason for this rather large population of Africans in Tokyo or if it is just a case of Tokyo being a typical cosmopolitan city.

Ever since reggae music hit Japan, people have gone nuts over ethnic foods from Africa. I swear reggae is more popular in Japan than Jamaca. :)

Roppongi is unique in Japan. It is almost like a foreign country :) I remember visiting it once after living a few years in a part of Japan without many foreigners and being shocked at all the foreigners. It was a strange experience. :o
