Are Japanese Open Minded to.....

Postby MetalSlime23 » Mon 08.22.2005 11:47 am

I have an honest question for anybody that has either been to or lived in Japan. I get the impression from what I've read and some of the anime/manga I have seen that the Japanese are pretty open minded when it comes to things like homosexuality. My qustion is:

1. Is this true?
2. If so, how is it treated?

I know that public displays of affection from anybody is considered taboo, but do they have all kinds of political issues surrounding gay people like they do here? Do gay people hide themselves like they do here because they are outcasts of society?

I think this would be an interesting topic for discussion.

I know I can't stand the anti-gay attitude here, and I'm sure others agree with me. B)

Firstly, I agree with your opinion. To me, homophobia is just another excuse to hate/discriminate.

Though I don't live in Japan, or havn't been there, I know that:

- Japanese stars, such as some Jrockers, display themselves as both gay and straight (i.e. Gackt). I'm pretty sure all the Japanese know he's bisexual, since they have asked such questions on his interviews.

- Many Anime/Manga artists who draw shounen-ai or shoujo-ai are supported by both fans and seiyuu. Also, Japanese fanart and doujinshi consists mainly of yaoi or yuri (homosexuality).

Hope that wasn't totally useless information ^^;.

I may be mistaken, but wasn't it somewhat 'shunned' to even kiss in public? Like holding hands is supposed to be the most you should do or something along those lines?

Personally I'd have a tough time with that one =/ Now I'm not prone to like slobber over my girlfriend, but a little peck kiss good bye or something isn't anything out of the normal.

As with all places, I really think it depends on the person.

Also, keep in mind that while it is more acceptable for TV stars and other 芸柏l to be openly gay, or appear gay, it is quite another thing for an individual.

I have a number of friends who are gay, and hide it from their workplace or family for fear of discrimination.

But then you have TV stars like Hard Gay and whatnot, and it makes you wonder. ;)

I would say that on the whole, Japan is much more open about gayness than America, but that doesn't necessarily translate into day to day life for the average gay person..

If that makes any sense...

Actually that exactly describes America, a lot of gay/lesbian actors and celebrities do get away with it, and for some it seems to help their career.

I personally have a problem with it, but at the same time I know a lot of people are gay against thier will, but then I could get into all sorts of relegious convictions, cures, etc, and this is just a place to study Japanese. :D I think of it as a disease, I don't hate the person for it but it would be nice if they were cured of it.

Yeah, I've known that some actors put on a show pretending they are gay just so they can have something to use to get them noticed...

But as for tv stars/"talents" they seem pretty open to the idea, though I hardly see any open lesbians....

Wow.

I think of prejudiced people who are too ignorant to realise how hypocritical they are for isolating a fetish are a disease in and of themselves. I wish they would be cured of it. I don't hate them for it. I just wish they'd be cured.

Fact: some people pretend to be metrosexual/homosexual for attention.

To link that to homosexuality itself and calling it bad is tomfoolery.

It's a good thing you don't get into a discussion about it, because attempting to prove that someone is "gay against their will" involves the most superficial analysis of the human psyche known to man.

That being said, I think it's all generally like in America. Japan has an odd mix of progressive and regressive characteristics, and one of them makes big personalities and exception to 'the rule,' just like here.

actually, i've found that the japanese i've personally encountered are as backwards-thinking about homosexuality as some of the people on this messageboard. it's not a disease, let alone anything needing of a cure, but i digress. while i was in japan, far too many japanese asked me about homosexuals in america. it seems that the japanese have the impression that an awful lot of americans are homosexuals (one guy even said 1 out of 10) and that they can marry each other. i had a very difficult time trying to explain to them, "no, you're thinking of canada."

There was a poll (I don't trust polls) a while back that resulted in Japan being the most anti-homosexual in the country. 69% of people polled said they wouldn't wouldn't want to live next to homosexuals. The next closest country was the US, in which 38% said they wouldn't want to live next to homosexuals.

The ideas about why homosexuality is so widespead in various forms of media (japanese and american) are completely political so I'm not going to go there.

Okay, in japan there are a lot of manga things that are homosexual. I've read some for fun. I see nothing wrong with it anymore. There's nothing wrong with it since I have friend who does happen to be gay. It's not a disease and he did not choose to be gay. People just don't see how a male could ever love a male, and a female could ever love a female. That's why people want a cure for it? It's physical attraction. I am straight, but I do understand why people like the things they do.

Certainly it was not my intention to turn this into a discussion about whether homosexuality is wrong or not. I hope nobody gets offended by anything that has been said so far. I want to explain the source of my posting this morning. I got into an agrument the other day with a friend of mine who is in love with Sailor Moon, and we began talking about anime and Japanese culture. He told me that some of the characters in Sailor Moon are supposed to be lesbians, and then went on to explain that this (as well as other things found in anime) was a reflection of Japanese societal beliefs. From there he told me that the Japanese don't make an issue out of homoseuality like America does. While I have seen some obvious homosexual references in anime, I also know that the same thing exists here in America. Since my friend has never been to Japan, I decided that rather than taking his word for it, I would ask someone who has. I suppose this all ties into the age old question of whether televison is reflection of society, or are we a reflection of television?

Television and media are never good ways to judge groups as this thread shows. Homosexuality is a fairly common subject in the japanese media. This is particulary true for animated media, and more particulary animated pornography. Many have actually said that this has been harmful to homosexual groups in Japan because it fosters an idea that homosexuality isn't "real". Many in japan seem to believe that homosexuality exists only in the world of yaoi and porn or that it's a "western thing".

In the days of the samurai, homosexuality was seen as "a good thing and a bad thing" (from the Hagakure, the book of the Samurai). It was a bad thing because a gay samurai would have to be 100% devoted to both his lord and his lover, which was impossible.

Not sure how this applies to modern Japan, but I found interesting nonetheless.

Regarding Hagakure, it must be remembered that this writing is just a few men's interpertations of the code of Bushido. In one of the snippets, Tsunetomo states "An act of homosexuality can bring shame for a lifetime", then goes on to say how to deal with homosexuality (in which he shows in a positive light). This shows, that like all societies then, that at least outwardly homosexuality was a thing looked down upon. In my opinion, the main reason why homosexuality was so prominent amongst the warrior class was the very strong distaste they had for women.

Ack, I get flamed...

Didn't mean to offend anyone, I wasn't called them diseased, but I lacked any other symbolism to describe my outlook on it. I supposed calling it a fetish is a bit more appropriate, but I can't really speak for the homosexual population. (Although it gives me the shudders thinking of anohter guy passionatly kissing another guy).

Now then, moving on.

Interesting what they thought way back when, this does intruige more research.
