Eating Natto

I still haven't tried natto. If I did, I couldn't tell my 'natto story'.

It's a small price to pay.

Let's see what i remember to say from what i read... Hmmm, first, what the heck is molded beans? I know what beans are, but molded beans?

And second, cheese...I've tasted TONS of them! My father is crazy for cheese (just yesterday he brought home around 30 small cheeses (sp?), no wait, and 6 more fresh cheeses, plus around 5 more we already had at home, you do the math), and i can say, there are some cheeses that smell terribly!!!
Like one cheese that's very popular with my mom and sister here, it's one that you cut the top part and the inside is buttery, like butter to put in bread, of course, and sticky. That cheese as a horrible smell, but the taste is ok, nothing like the smell.

3rd thing... maybe, just maybe, i'll try natto someday... This thread got me scared a bit. I'm very weird about what i eat.

You know what scares me? The idea that molded beans are exactly what they sound like. I'm familiar with molded items, it's what happens to food left in my refrigerator too long. I don't eat them. I throw them out.

I don't know, honestly. The one i'm referring to is made in a certain part of Portugal. And i have the impression 'brie' is french? So maybe not. But i'm not sure. I just know it's used like butter, on your bread.

Natto does not have any mold. They are fermented beans, but the stringiness comes from the bacteria involved in the natto production. Like most other fermented foods, natto is not made by randomly leaving beans sitting around, it involves a carefully controlled process and actually only takes a week or so.

(Cheese and yogurt both rely on bacteria too, so don't be too grossed out by that.)

I know Taiteki-san. For a moment i was disgusted, but i understand that could never be it.
I've actually been studying that process in my biology class for the last weeks.

Edit: Oh, i just realised... I could never eat natto... i hate beans. -_- Amazing how i didn't even remember that before. Also amazing that i actually had to remember that.

molded beans should probably be read as modly beans.. lol.. molded beans sounds like someone put them in a jello mold and let them form in the shape of the mold.

Yes, that's what i thought at first!! Pretty weird!

And i'm still not sure. It doesn't mention a very bad smell or anything... So i don't know. There are a lot of kinds of cheese, so i can't say which one this is.

It seems that heated natto is not so offensive to the nose.

I should have told an important point. They say nattokinase (ナットウ・キナーゼ=ナットウ菌) is good for health. Some specialists point out that nattokinase is weak against heat and it must die when adding heat.
So some might think that it isn't worth cooking なっとう by heat.

Eating なっとう with minced 梅干し is my favorite.

I feel an empty package of なっとう smells worse than なっとう itself.

me too, just for the purpose of cultural education. I know the local Japanese restaurant does serve it off the special "japanese" menu they don't normally show customers.

What does it smell like?! After the descriptions I've heard of the all-pervading stench that is natto I sure hope it doesn't leave you smelling like its namesake.

I understand the urge to smell like food. I just showered with a vanilla body wash and put on a moisturizer that makes me smell like a chocolate pastry, but smelling like natto?
