I agree completely. The only person in this entire world that my wife feels at all jealous of is Sakamoto Fuyumi. My eyes glaze over when she sings. :p

Oh, HECK yeah. Really impresses the heck out of the ossan at the snack bar when the gaijin mascot (that would be me) can emote that line properly.

Oh, and it's self-referential! (「演歌を聞きながらぁ,」) Although when I want to be more roudy, there's... damn, I can't remember the title of that one. You know, Yoshi Ikuzo's 「酒持ってこい！酒持ってこい！ニッポンにある酒、みんな持ってこい！」But as I think about it, I believe it's called 酒持ってこい.

I used to live at a little スナック in Kameari. Seven stools at the bar, and two seats on a raised section off in a corner. The couple who owned it were friends (the wife was the mama) and I got in that way. It's one of those places where you pretty much have to be a regular to "fit in" or be brought in by a regular to get a second chance at all -- sort of like a union, now that I think about it.

I do remember the looks of shock on some people's faces when they stopped in for the first time, and I'm sitting in my usual seat at the end of the bar talking LDP politics with Tamura-san. We had one guy who was an middle-executive at a Korean sporting goods company. Japanese fellow, but he spent a lot of time dealing with Korean upper management. When he got drunk (say, five minutes into walking in the door) he'd start talking in a kind of English/Japanese/Korean ちんぷんかんぷん。きょうmy気分チョワイヨ。ン。His motto -- which he said EVERY DAY -- was "Tomorrow is Sunday" -- which meant "keep drinking, you don't have to get up tomorrow."

He's also the fellow who got me into the really maudlin songs, like some of the "we're marching off to die" 軍歌 like 「すばる」. Heck, you want a depressing song, try that one.

Actually, the site originally suggested by nihongogakusei is a great intro to enka. The woman who runs the site (Barbara) has links to short sound files so you can even listen to many of the artists posted there.

I hate enka. I understand it has Japanese culture, but the music is just SO BAD. Sorry.

I disliked the way Enka singers sang with those alternating pitches at first, but it has kind of grown on me. Kind of like nori. I didn't like stinky seaweed at first, but now I can't get enough of it. Exactly like nori.
