The 一人で is fine in that position, but:
私は一人で日本語を勉強しています。
私は一人で日本語を勉強しています。

Depends on what you mean. If you mean "I'm studying Japanese alone.", then 勉強しています is the right option. With 勉強します it would mean "I will study Japanese alone."

Thanks for the heads up, but I doubt I'll make it - NYC isn't somewhere I go for pleasure, as a rule.

I used that same sentence when speaking to a japanese person, and they said 独学で is better than 一人で.

Does JLPT count as pleasure?

Yes, I prefer the old Times Square too.

Thanks, that's a good one!
juddcarlos2003, I'm not really sure how to pronounce that...I love the way I ask a question and get a bunch of different answers though. Best thing about this site.

Why 学んでいます instead of 勉強しています?
I guess you could use either one... 学んでいます is more like "I'm learning" and 勉強しています is like "I'm studying"
I would go with 学んでいます because you are learning something... but like I said... I guess you can use either one.
Would anyone else know which would sound more practical?
(学んでいます or 勉強しています)

学ぶ is not a word I hear very much in conversation, and none of the examples in any of my dictionaries have 学ぶ in the ている form. alc does list some, though.
