RE: Kansaiben
I was curious if anyone has found a site yet? I'm watching Lovely Complex and it's all in Kansai. I was thrown off a little (studying Japanese, upper beginner) at the differences. Although reading some of the posts have put a lot into perspective. The ya and hen, makes a lot of it make sense. But I would love to look deeper into.

I know. ^^ I'm always trying to figure out what they are saying, and it sounds so much more fun in kansai-ben. I need to know what they are saying. (Lovely Complex) LOL!
I actually found this page which was quite useful. http://www.guidetojapanese.org/wiki/index.php/Kansai_Dialect

I'd just like to post a little love for Nagoya-ben.
One of my old students in Sekigahara decided to study Nagoyaben for his independent study. He ended up changing his entire speaking pattern to old classical Nagoya ben.
Myself, it's all about Ogaki-ben. But that's just because I can't speak anything else.

The awesomeness of Kansai-ben simply can't be encompassed by a single website. Particularly since intonation is a strong feature.

Osaka ben, Kyoto ben, Nara ben.. the list goes on.
What is Kansai ben exaclty?
I agree with Mike. That term (if you call it) is far too loosely thrown around.

Until one has heard non-native speakers of English attempting to speak some particular dialect of English, I don't think one can realize what utter asses we must sound like when we try to be too-cool-for-the-room by insisting on inflicting half-assed renditions of some Japanese dialect on our hosts.
Never underestimate my capacity for pettiness.

Bah!
You don't need a foreigner's attempt. It's bad enough hearing a native from a different region make the attempt. I feel like slapping a yankee in the face when they give me the Hidey ho partner. That is NOT a southern or Texan greeting.

I've met a number of Japanese students of English who were trying to specialize in a specific region's dialect. Actually, it's not surprising since unlike Japanese, there is no standard dialect for English. Most of the ones I've seen study the American dialect. The English dialect seems to be the second most common. Outside of those 2, I've only known 1 that's studying the Canadian dialect, but that's mostly because he lives in Canada. Then again, I could probly assume the girl I met with the Australian husband would be studying the Australian dialect.
