Advance Searching

Postby lalaith » Sun 05.06.2007 8:35 pm

I was thinking that it would be very helpful if the "Search" were made more flexible.

Right now you can only search on one of the following at a time:
Articles
News
Forum Posts
Subject
Downloads
Web Links
Members
By UserId

It would be nice if you could if you search on multiples. So if you remember that User X mentioned something specific in a post, you could get a better match. Right now if you tried searching by User you, of course, get every post ever made -- and with some of you guys that's in the thousands. And if you tried searching just by what was said in the post, you could get hundreds of matches. So it's kind of hard to find one particular post.

This is such a great learning site and know that there are threads that I've seen that I'm going to want to reference later.

However, I realize I don't have a clue how much work it would take to do this.

Go to google, type:

"site:thejapanesepage.com/forum" "[username]" [whatever text you want to search]

Thanks for the info. Never occurred to me to search from outside the forum.

i missed this post the first time around... but yeah, Google is much better than the built-in search. i don't know how to add a Google search box, but i'll try to figure it out.

ありがとうございます。Zen-san. :)

Yes, I saw the Google inside-site-search on A Japanese guide to Japanese grammar page. It's very helpful. If we had the inside site-Google, that would be great.

Thanks in advance. よろしくお願いします。

Great! It works very well to me since it is a Japanese version!
Book marked. Thanks, Furin-san. :)

Please try to search "syndrome"+"coco" with that.
I often forget this.
That was why I shouted a lot in this morning(JST). :p

i added Google Search to my [wiki]Zengargoyles_ToDo_List[/wiki]. i'll try to hack something up this weekend, the big difficulty is that Google Search uses UTF-8 encoding while the TJP site uses SJIS encoding.... this makes some of the functionality of Google Search break. :(

it is not easy to add a Google Search box to regular TJP pages, but it is not that hard to make a Search page that will work with Google Search. i have a couple of *test* pages for Google Search that work pretty well. i will try to make them available to other TJP users. :)
