Is the "u" in zuki silent like in suki or is it voiced?

On WWWJDIC, there's no sound file for 猫好き but there is one for 大の猫好き!

Apparently it's voiced in this compound (I don't know for sure, but I suspect it is voiced in all similar compounds.)
I have a feeling that the vowel becomes voiced because the consonant part of the mora has become voiced, but I'm not certain of that. If someone knows for sure that that's a general rule, I'd like to hear it.
