Where oh Where do I go
Well I just finished the Hiragana section in the beginner area, but im having trouble on where to go next for learning. Its been pretty much my dream to read, write, and speak Japanese so I can one day visit Japan itself. Which brings me to my one real big question, If I were in Japan from America, what kind of Japanese would I need to learn? I mean, what is the main, universal type of Japanese you always see in anime/manga and other Japanese media? I hear its a mix of Hiragana and Kanji but im still in the dark. Like I said before, I've finished and I am studying the Hiragana section. If anyone can tell me where to go from here, i'd be super greatful. Arigatou! -CJ

Yeah, even young Japanese kids usually don't really start learning Kanji until they've mastered Kana (Hiragana and Katakana). Which is actually a good thing, because Kanji is so intimidating. Haha. The most USED writing system is Hiragana, but usually Japanese is written with a combination of all three! You could probably actually get around pretty good at first without knowing much Kanji, so the next step is most definitely Katakana. (Katakana is used mostly for foreign names and words that come from other languages.) So, I would suggest learning Katakana next, then Kanji. So, good luck! =]

Lol, I'm at the same point! I think from here, Katakana (kanji: 片仮名, hiragana:かたかな) is the next step. You might also start on some kanji (ugh). Look into getting a good text book like Genki (げんき). Good Luck to the both of us!
