I would suggest that all new articles have a copy put on WagaWiki.

* WagaWiki probably isn't going to be a textbook.

Proper textbooks require a high level of organization and professional style that is going to be very difficult to achieve (as can be seen from my partially successful attempts at Grammar page 1 and Grammar page 2).

You can upload an avatar on your [http://www.thejapanesepage.com/edit_profile.php Edit Profile] page.

The avatar has to be 100x100 or smaller, and in either a format of .jpg, .gif or .png. If its not that small or the wrong format, then you can stick it in paint and adjust it that way. It should also be 20kb or smaller, this may be a problem with animated gifs.

If your image does not fit the regulation size, it will appear as a broken image. If you are having trouble with the image and one of the dimensions is 100px, try changing it to 99px. Also be sure that its file type is the same as given in the file name (renaming .art to .gif does '''not''' make an AOL picture into a .gif one).

First of all you have to have a picture that fits the space allowed (100x400 pixels).

When you have a picture you want to use in your signature you have to upload it to an image hosting site. There are many free sites on the internet where you can upload and host your image. For instance: http://imageshack.us

When you’re done uploading your picture you get a link. As an example:

Japanese is built-in, and already loaded. You just have to activate it.

Navigate to [apple logo] -> System Preferences -> International -> Language

If you don't see "日本語" listed under the "Language" tab, click the "Edit List..." button. Scroll through the list and check the box next to "日本語".

Next, click the "Input Menu" tab. Scroll through the list and make sure the box for "あ Kotoeri" is checked. Also, at the bottom, there is an optional box "Show input menu in menu bar" that you can check to see the currently running input method next to your clock.

Nobody is going to do '''everything''' for you for free. Post sensible specific questions in the forums and people will probably answer them. ===What should I study first?===

Hiragana first. It is the absolute basic thing to learn. It's easy enough to understand and utilise within a week or so and it goes very far to help you understand Japanese. Katakana is usually the next step. Katakana phonetically spell out foreign words in Japanese. Both syllabaries have the same sounds, but different characters. After that, learning is much easier.

===Do I really have to learn Kanji?===
If you want to be able to read and write passably in Japanese, yes. Kanji aren't difficult, but learning them is time consuming. They also help to make the spoken language easier to understand because it clarifies how words share the same roots in the Japanese mind.

Learn to love them early on and it will make your learning swifter and far more pleasant.

The short answer is yes. The more complex answer depends on the reason for asking this question. In general, unless studying very advanced Japanese, there are plenty of non-Japanese members that can answer any question accurately. The native Japanese usually only step in to answer if one of the other members answers incorrectly. Just remember that asking specifically for a Japanese person to answer a queston is usually considered rude and can alienate other members.

If a Japanese person is needed to fill out some kind of survey, then these requests are more tolerated. Follow standard survey practices, otherwise some who might be willing to take the survey may lose interest.

Kanji Benkyou Example Fix

These are the last batch of example sentences for the Kanji Benkyou panel application. The should theoretically be as simple as possible since they are the examples shown on the panel. But since the panel doesn't show past the first 300 or so kanji... it's no big deal. :)

==What to do==
===Look for errors===
Fix any errors in the kana version of the sentences, or in the English translation part.
===Touch up Romaji===
The romaji was computer generated from the kanji version of the sentence by a program called 'Kakasi'. I barely understand how to use this program, and it does some weird things. Mostly, fix to Hepburn-ish romaji.
* wo -> o
* he -> e
* ha -> wa (where applicable)
* spaces around 'no'/'na'
* sometimes final 'i' of adjectives is spaced away from word... "atarashi i" -> "atarashii"
* sometimes verb endings space in weird places... "shin da" -> "shinda".
* other stuff that I'm forgetting about.
====Touchup Example====

I know that im not a frequent guest on chatt lately but im 100% with coco chan and Tanuki san, we shouldnt keep our private talks logs at all, moderators please delete these logs, unfortunately I was one of the persons that did not know that logs are made and kept, and I was talking about stuff that wasnt connected with JLPT lvl4. In my humble opinion from now on only LVL4 room logs should be made and kept but topic in this room should always warn all users that LOG is beeing made, other room logs shouldnt be made at all.

maybe this is a U.S. thing, but as far as i am concerned, public chatrooms have no expectation of privacy. it is routine to log all public group chat rooms, and to possibly make those records public. on the TJP chatrooms, it is up to the room Owner/Creator to decide whether or not the room will be logged. since i created the 'lounge' and 'chat_in_japanese' rooms, i made them logged. these public rooms that are sorta directly approved by TJP should be logged at the server side to prevent abuse. without logging it would be a 'he said' vs 'she said' argument should some sort of abuse occur. these group chat rooms are no different than the forums. they are public.

however, rest assured... private 'person to person' chat (aka IM) are not logged in any way. private 'person to person' is private (but many chat clients allow logging of conversation on client side.).

so... public TJP rooms (lounge, chat_in_japanese) are logged and not private. for other rooms it is up to the room creator to decide whether or not to log. if you want a private group chat, create a room and do not enable logging (logging is disabled by default).

there is no easy way to make logs only available to users of a certain chat room. they are either open to everybody, or they are not. there is no inbetween.

if you want a warning to all users that group chat rooms may be logged, give me a translation into Japanese of the warning message and i'll make it the 'new user' message that everybody recieves the first time they join chat. :)

I know that im not a frequent guest on chatt lately but im 100% with coco chan and Tanuki san, we shouldnt keep our private talks logs at all, moderators please delete these logs, unfortunately I was one of the persons that did not know that logs are made and kept, and I was talking about stuff that wasnt connected with JLPT lvl4. In my humble opinion from now on only LVL4 room logs should be made and kept but topic in this room should always warn all users that LOG is beeing made, other room logs shouldnt be made at all.
Im sorry for my poor english, fell free to correct my post(correct not change ;-) )

yeah, i sorta want to finish fleshing out the page (and testing to make sure i remembered everything correctly :) ) before putting it somewhere more prominent. it will probably end up in the [[Just The FAQs]] page and maybe a post on TJP...

i'm even thinking about making a sticky '''Site Log/Info''' thread in the site forum for keeping a running list of changes/fixes/misc. site stuff.

==What is furigana?==

Small [[Kana|kana]] above kanji(漢字) telling the reader how those kanji are pronounced. 
example:

漢 is pronounce "かん" and 字 is pronounce "じ"

In html furigana can be reproduced by use of the ruby tag, however this tag remains unsupported by standard installations of many browsers including Firefox and Mozilla. The ruby tag was made part of the XHTML 1.1 specification on May 31, 2001.

==How is furigana used?==

As well as the "official" use described above furigana is also used in a number of other ways.

* To give the meaning of a word in contrast to what is actually said.

For example あの人 could have the furigana of おんな above the kanji 人 to make it clear that it is a woman being talked about.

* To give what is said in contrast to the exact meaning being referred to.

For example you might have 義妹 with the furigana いもうと when いもうと is what is being said but the person in question is actually a step or adopted sister.

* With カタカナ語.

Particularly in manga it is common to have some term said in "English" (written in katakana) but with the Japanese word given (often in kanji) as well. In such cases it varies between having the kanji as the main word with the katakana above it or vice versa.

* To give an alternative word (generally of the same, or similar, meaning)

For example having the furigana びしょう above the word 微笑む or the furigana わけ above the kanji 理由 (in the latter case it would be unclear whether it would actually be said りゆう or わけ - either is possible).

===Ok, So you're New===

Everyone was new at one time or another, but that won't draw much mercy when you come into a new place and start stepping on people's toes instead of shaking their hands. Everyone has standards of respect; failing to meet these standards will draw contempt and ridicule, but there is hope. All you need to do is take a little time to show others respect by composing your messages seriously. I'm making this list because even though some of these should fall under the heading: Common Sense, the others are truly learned behaviors. If you've never seen a list like this before--rest assured--these rules will serve you well on any forum.

==Etiquette for online forums==

1. Always read at least 50 posts before posting!
:Nothing draws ridicule faster than asking a question right above someone else who asked the same question.
2. Always read the [http://thejapanesepage.com/w/index.php?title=Just_the_FAQs FAQs] or any "[http://www.thejapanesepage.com/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=13&thread_id=138 Read before posting]" messages.
:Posting a question answered in the FAQ will not make you friends. "Read before Posting" rules usually specify forum specific rules that often go beyond standard etiquette. Be sure to read it.
3. Write respectfully.
:This in not just modes of address but showing good grammar and spelling. Forums are not like a chat room with text wizzing by. Posters are expected to take the time to write well. Remember, if you respect your readers your readers will respect you. Learning a language means you take effective communication seriously. Prove it.
4. Don't spam.
:Make one post. Always give at least 24 hours before complaining no one answered your post. If you answer two or more people, edit all your responses into one post.
5. Before posting, google your question.
:If your question is answered in the top 5 google hits, people will consider you too lazy to bother helping.
6. Use the forum search function.
:If the forum has a search function, use it before posting.
7. Don't ask for help without showing that you did make an effort on your own.
:If you ask for help and show you made an effort, you automatically made friends who will extremely helpful.
8. Don't Necropost without cause.
:Necroposting is posting on a thread that was dead and buried and bringing it back to life. You avoid necroposting by looking at the Posted date. If the thread was controversial let it stay buried; if the thread seems pertinent then it should be ok to necropost. The important point is not to chime in on a heated discussion that ended years ago.
9. Be brief.
:The more concise your post the more people that will read it and potentially reply.
10. Use white space.
:Big blocks of text are difficult to read. If you break up your paragraphs with a full blank line, more people will read them.
11. Don't post big pictures in the text.
:Big pictures tend to ruin the forum formatting. Always post big pictures as a link, thumbnail links are ok.
12. Avoid posting long URLs.
:Long URLs can also ruin the page formatting and just look bad. Some members use tinyurl.com but I suggest just making a link. Type the text you want to link then highlight it. On the composition window there will be a button for URL. Click it with the text highlighted and the text will now be surrounded by <nowiki>[url]your text[/url]</nowiki> after the first url type = then paste the URL. so it will look like this. <nowiki>[url=http://www.google.com]Google[/url]</nowiki> If you post like this, the readers will just see the link for Google with the rest hidden.
13. Don't hijack threads.
:Making a post that does not even relate to a previous post on the thread is considered hijacking. Another form of hijacking is to transform someone else's thread into your own by asking a new question on someone else's thread. The standard rule for posting is one thread one question. It's best to start a new thread if you have a new question. Be warned, hijacking a tread is a form of contempt. If regular members start hijacking your thread, then it's usually a sign you broke one of the rules of etiquette.
14. Don't insult the mods.
:This is one of those common sense things I mentioned.
15. Don't troll.
:Trolling is deliberately stirring controversy. There are different types of Trolls, but all like to stir up trouble.
16. Don't feed the trolls.
:Now that you know what a troll is, you know how to fight them. Trolls feed on attention. If you ignore them they die the slow painful death they deserve.
17. Don't flame.
:If you have a problem with a post, only address your problems with the post. Never insult the poster. Flaming is dedicating an entire post, or series of posts, to insulting another poster.
18. Never ask another poster to break the rules of Internet Safety.
:Asking for personal information, such as e-mail addresses, on a public forum is a ''Bad Thing''. If you are unfamiliar with basic internet safety then go learn that, then come back. Internet Safety first.

when i made the wiki page, i'm pretty sure i was looking at the code at the same time. it should be noted, the limit is 20,000 bytes, depending on whether the program or file listing the user is using (1024 bytes per k or 1000 bytes per k) may cause some confusion.

i would guess that other problems are people doing things like:
* saving a BMP file and then noticing that a JPG, PNG or GIF is required they just rename the file to end in ''.jpg'', ''.png'' or ''.gif''.
* they use an image from AOL that is really in ART format even though the extension says ''.gif''
* they save the file from their paint program as a BMP but give it a ''.gif'' name
* other various things like the above.

there are only 4 ways for the upload to fail.
# filename doesn't end in ''.jpg'', ''.gif'' or ''.png''. (case is '''not''' significant)
# PHP '''imgsize''' function can't parse the file. probably because it's not PNG, GIF or JPG.
# '''imgsize''' function reports image larger than 100x100.
# filesize > 20000 bytes.

otherwise it ''should'' work. it's probably best to use simple filenames without spaces or other funny characters: '''myavatar.jpg''' instead of '''My Avatar v. 1.02 (haha funny).jpg'''

==Character Encoding (Charset)==
This is the term for code systems used to store and display text of various languages in electronic form. Common encoding systems that support Japanese are Extended Unix Code(EUC-JP), Japanese(JIS), Japanese(Shift-JIS), Unicode(UTF-8). Of these Japanese(JIS) is probably the most common for use on web-pages.

Web servers should specify the correct charset when serving web-pages, or charset information can be given in the <meta> tag of pages. If your browser has the wrong encoding selected when viewing a page it may appear as [[mojibake]].

Sadly, using a <meta> tag rarely works. If the web server sends a '''Content-Type''' header like it is supposed to, the browser will use that information instead. The easiest way to override the character encoding of a web page is to use the ''.htaccess'' file.

I have taken both ３級 and ２級. Both times I thought I had failed and both times I miraculously passed, and I do mean miraculously!! Please check out our [http://www.thejapanshop.com/default.php?cPath=1_40 TheJapanShop.com] for prep books for the JLPT - The grammar books have practice tests as well as specific grammar points that often appear on the tests.

About the psychological side of the tests... They're scary! The time limits are short and the answers are long. But it can be fun. Really! It is a great challenge, and if you love Japanese, you may actually enjoy the challenge. I had studied well [well, sort of...] and was ready to test my abilities. So I actually enjoyed taking the tests [except when I had a splitting headache during the ２級 listening comprehension part!] Always look on the bright side of life - Hey, even if you fail that means you have a whole year to hone your skills before the next attempt (the test is only once a year). [see how I am staying positive here - I could have just as easily said, "If you fail you will just have to wait a full year in shame and a deprived sense of self confidence" - But I didn't say that! Always look on the bright side of life.]

４級 yon kyuu

I cannot speak from experience about 4級 but I have heard that people who have only studied Japanese even a few months can pass it. Most JETs [foreigners hired to assist Japanese English teachers in schools in Japan] come to Japan in July. It is very possible to start studying in July and pass the test in December. It will take work, but it can be done. The first 100 kanji can be learned relatively easily + hiragana + very basic grammar.

３級 san kyuu

I took this test after about 2 years of studying Japanese. I loved to study kanji so the 300 kanji needed for the test was no problem. What was a problem was the grammar. If you are studying in a school setting, perhaps the grammar will not be such a problem, but I only studied what I liked, and that was not grammar! I didn't find the listening part too difficult, but perhaps if you live in an area devoid of Japanese speakers, it may be difficult. Choose what is the hardest for you and study it until you know it well or hate it, whichever comes first. BTW a great way to answer someone asking you what level you are going for, is "san kyuu --- very much!"

２級 ni kyuu

Although the differences between ４級 and ３級 are not too pronounced, the jump from ３級 to ２級 is. The kanji jumps from 300 to 1000! The grammar is infinitely more complex, and there are masses of reading material. I found the reading to be the most challenging. <Clay's confession: I didn't study for the reading... End confession> As a result I failed that part (but I passed because overall my score was ok) Practice reading and understanding. However my biggest advice is learn the 1000 kanji well and study ２級 grammar. I found the reading to be more difficult, but it doesn't count as much overall as the kanji and grammar. Again, know the kanji and grammar! The kanji on [http://www.thejapanesepage.com/ www.thejapanesepage.com] cover all ２級 kanji. I would suggest finding a grammar book specially for ２級 - again try [http://www.thejapanshop.net/jlpt.htm TheJapanShop]

１級 ikkyuu

This is the hardest and most prestigious test. I hope to have １級 kanji up soon. :)

ADVICE FROM Omprakash-san

I have something to say people who take JLPT
--------------------------------------------
4Kyuu- I took this in the year 1998 after 2 months of study and could pass with 84%. A little agressiveness and a proper teaching guideline will make this level very much possible.

3kyuu- I took this in the year 1999 and could pass comfortably with 80%. There is not much difference between 4 kyuu and 3 kyuu. Little more interest and dedication this level can well be achieved. But this level does not suffice carrying out a business in Japan.

2Kyuu- I took this in the year 2001 and could secure 70%. During this time I was staying in Japan. This helped me a lot. If somebody is staying in Japan and preparing for this level, my sincere advice is to watch Television regularly for 2-3 hrs everyday. This will help tremendously. One should have tremedous interest in kanji. For this adequate FLASH MEMORY is required. One should enjoy Kanji in this level. Reading comprehension is the toughest part in this level.But if one scores 100% in Grammar and Kanji, then it can balance the overall score.

1Kyuu- I am so desparate to clear-up this level, though I know the level of difficulty for this level. To pass this proffessional attitude is highly required, I believe. One should prepare a proper strategic plan before appearing the test. One should master all Kanji listed for 1kyuu.
