JLPT N5 Grammar: いつ itsu – when


 ABOUT: 

いつ means "when" or "how soon." It is almost always written in kana because the kanji, 何時(いつ), can also be read なんじ (what time?).


 Examples:

ごはんは、いつですか?
When is the food ready?

優子(ゆうこ)さんは、いつ()ますか?
When will Yuko come?


Other Forms:

■ いつも always
  -> いつも、ありがとうございます! Thank you, always!

■ いつもどおり as always; as usual
  -> いつもどおり、ピザにしましょう。 Let's get pizza as usual.

■ いつから from when; when will it start?
  -> いつから、会議(かいぎ)(はじ)めますか? When will the meeting start?

■ いつまで until when
  -> いつまで、アメリカにいますか? How long will you be in the States?

■ いつまでも forever; for good; indefinitely
  -> いつまでも、(あい)しています。 I will love you forever.

■ いつか someday; sometime; one day
  -> いつか、日本(にほん)()きたいです。 I want to go to Japan one day.

■ いつの()にか before you know it
  -> いつの()にか、お金持(かねも)ちになりました。 Before I knew it, I became rich.

■ いつごろ about when; how soon
  -> いつごろ、パーティーにきますか? About when will you come to the party?
