JLPT N4 Grammar: Sugiru すぎる too much

～すぎる exceeding; too much

exceeding; too much; to overdo something

■ Verb (-masu stem) + すぎる (or すぎます)
言(い)います (to speak) → 言(い)い → 言(い)いすぎる (to say too much)

■ -na Adjectives + すぎる (or すぎます)
簡単(かんたん) (easy; simple) → 簡単(かんたん)すぎる (too easy)

■ -i Adjectives + drop the い + すぎる (or すぎます)
暑(あつ)い (hot) → 暑 → 暑(あつ)すぎる (too hot)

例文(れいぶん) EXAMPLE SENTENCE

料理(りょうり)がうまいので、また食(た)べ過(す)ぎました。

cooking-(subject marker)-good-therefore-again-eat-too much.
The food was so good, I ate too much again.

昨日(きのう)の夜(よる)は宴会(えんかい)があったので食(た)べ過(す))ぎました。

この宿題(しゅくだい)は難(むずか)しすぎる。

this | homework | as for | difficult | too much

This homework is too difficult.

COMMENTS

■ The kanji is 過(す)ぎる which means “to exceed” but it is most often written in kana only.

■ To show a negative degree or something lacking using ない, the form is なさすぎる:

常識(じょうしき)がなさすぎる

not enough common sense

遠慮(えんりょ)がなさすぎる

not enough discretion; not reserved enough
